A Lesson of Commitment

Home » Spiritual Growth » A Lesson of Commitment

My word for year–commit–tested me. Rather, it guided me in making a decision.

I wanted to back out of a commitment I made months ago, something that is to continue through the next five months. But right before I spoke about my wavering decision, the word “commit” popped in my mind and I realized what I had to do. I ‘ll go forward with the original plan.

The Lord used this little situation to remind me to fulfill any commitment fulfilled, no matter how small the incident.

I’m committed to follow through on major life things like faith in Jesus Christ, my marriage, and my family to name a few. But the less important situations also need the proof of commitment.

The world has increasingly taken commitments lightly. The phrase “I’m all in” refers to someone stating a commitment. Spoken enthusiastically at first, these words are decisive; but as time passes, the commitment can wane. Commitment is being “all in” when you don’t feel like it, when the fun is gone. The decision to stick with it when the results are less that anticipated. Perseverance follows commitment.

We have to choose our  attitude as we continue the commitment–will we be grumpy or content?

I had to answer that question once I decided to keep my commitment. Choosing a positive attitude led to a heart change and I began to enjoy the activity again.

Remembering our commitments will bring about a better perspective on what actions we’ll take. This will help sort out priorities and give us direction.

These verses help us be mindful of our commitments:

“All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” Jesus, in Matt. 5:37 NIV

“Let your heart therefore be wholly true to the Lord our God, walking in his statutes and keeping his commandments, as at this day.” 1 Kings 8:61 ESV

Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:52 ESV

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Col. 3:23

The little lessons can speak loudly to us if we let them. The impact of our commitments spills into our attitude giving us a different perspective. God gives us the grace and perseverance to follow through.

Commitment shapes our lives.

Do you have commitments you need to evaluate or strengthen?
