Several years ago we planted an Autumn Blaze maple tree in front of our house, which turns crimson during fall. I look forward to the beauty of the color change, hoping the leaves remain on the branches for a while before the colder weather and wind blow them away.
This year the leaves stayed on longer, into the first week of November.
The beauty of the tree prompted spontaneous praise in my heart and thanks to God. When the air was cool and the sun shining bright, my spirits were lifted. Sunny fall days beckoned me to enjoy the outdoor transition of seasons.
But then the inevitable change happened.
We were gone over the weekend and returned home to the bare tree.
The crimson leaves dropped onto the soggy grass from cold rain, wind, and falling temperatures. The days of Autumn Glory were over. My spirit mirrored the gloomy sky. Drizzly, cold days make me want to stay inside with self pity and hibernate in lack of productivity.
At a closer look, a single red leaf, quivering in the cold breeze, brought hope in the next season.
God whispered hope to my soul, reminding me of His steadfast, unchangeable love in the changes around me.
Even in the inevitable change in life, His love never fails.
I gain a better perspective on situations when I remember God’s faithfulness and unchangeable nature.
When people shift from supporting you to abandoning you, God remains the same.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8 NIV
In the middle of transitions from calmness to chaos, God remains faithful.
I the Lord do not change. Malachi 3:6a NIV
When uncertainty arises in the middle of a once-stable situation, God is ever-present.
The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV
In this changeable culture, we have a place to bring our fears and questions. The Lord is a secure refuge. His character never changes.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17 NIV
Do you need stability in transitions?
Turn to the Lord, breathe in His grace and embrace His steadfast love.
God reveals the glory of His presence in the middle of change.

I loved this! I’ve thought of that hymn, too, as I’ve considered the changing seasons. God is faithful. 🙂
