What is Your Anchor?

Home » Spiritual Growth » What is Your Anchor?

waves, rock, what anchor

What is your anchor during change? Transitions are inevitable, yet so many of us resist them. We get comfortable in our way of doing things. When life is predictable we know what to expect and can manage the routine.

Flexibility helps us navigate the waters of change. While we need to be adaptable, we also need to be anchored, lest we drift into unforeseen hazards.

Here are three things to anchor you during change and transition:

1. Lean into the Lord.

He is faithful and does not change. This truth is a firm handrail to hold on to and a rock to cling to when life seems turned upside down. A previous post, Transitions Abound, offers eight Bible verses to help you lean into the Lord.

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliver; my God is a rock, in whom I take refuge.” Psalm 18:2

2.  Remain connected to the faith community, the church.

It is easy to withdraw and disconnect from the people God put in our lives to help us. Learn to accept help and encouragement from them. If you moved from one city to another, find a place to connect in worship. Be open to new friendships in this season. They can be an anchor for you.

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one a another…” Hebrews 10:25

3. Hold on to hope in the Lord. It is the most secure anchor in times of change.

Several years ago when I was in the middle of a season of uncertainty and change, the Lord impressed a verse on my heart. I wrote it on a notecard and taped it to my car’s dashboard. Every time I started the car I repeated it. Eventually I memorized it:

“May the God of all hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the HolySpirit.” Romans 15:13

This helped me have a positive focus instead of a troubled heart of worry. What made the difference? Holding on to hope. Real hope looks to God, believing that He will never abandon you, ever. Even in midst of change. When grounded in faith, hope enables us to navigate transition.

Hope becomes the anchor that keeps us from drifting into despair.      <click to tweet>

In the midst of upheaval, lean in to the Lord, remain connected to others for support, and hold on to hope. Then you will have a secure anchor.

What is your anchor? How do you navigate transition?
